Another week, another 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon teaser. We knew this thing was going to be built for the drag strip, but even we weren’t expecting this: The Demon will wear 315-width drag radials in the back and in the front. Those are the widest front tires ever fitted to a production vehicle, and they make the Demon the first car to wear drag radials from the factory.
The Demon takes the widest-front-tires crown from the last-generation Camaro Z/28, which wore 305-width tires all around. And while it might seem odd to slap such wide front tires on a car focused on drag racing, think of it this way: When you’ve burned through the rear tires, you can just rotate the fronts to the back and keep on going. Or if you’re a frequent drag strip visitor, you can swap some skinny wheels and tires on the front and have two sets of rear tires ready to roll.
About those tires: They’re not the typical factory rubber, either. The Demon takes advantage of Nitto’s NT05R drag radial, basically the closest thing you can get to a slick tire that still has enough tread to be street legal. They’re sized 315/40R18 front and rear, giving the Demon a big fat sidewall and wheels small enough that, we imagine, the Demon requires different brakes compared to the rest of the Challenger family that rides on 20s.
Look! They’ve even got little demons on the sidewalls.
As we’ve suspected for awhile, the Demon is gonna be wide. The big, beefy fender flares add 3.5 inches to the car’s overall width, hunkering down over the Demon-specific 18 x 11-inch lightweight wheels.
