Conventional thinking suggests if you want to go fast in a drag race, you’ve got to show up in a musclebound pony car or top dollar sports car. Most of the time, that would be a good start. But for the comedians of the world, there’s another way to do things – the frumpy sleeper.
As far as sleepers go, this one might be our favorite. It’s Leon Reitman’s mid-’90s Eagle Summit minivan, which notably came with the option of all-wheel-drive. It still keeps its four driven wheels too, but adds to the recipe the turbocharged power of a Mitsubishi 4G63 engine, of Lancer Evolution fame. Let’s see how this drag race goes down, shall we?
What with the plebeian looks, terribly forgettable nameplate, and soccer mom stickers on the rear – it isn’t looking good for the Eagle. But as soon as the Summit warms up those tires and leaps on its all-wheel-drive, you can tell there’s some serious ‘go’ under that hood. The 2.0-liter turbo spools up and both the Mustang and Supra are handily disposed of by the minivan.
The video was filmed a couple years back during a test and tune night at New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire, a town which apparently has at least one wrench-turning joker. Next time you pull up next to an Eagle Summit AWD… be warned, you might be in for one hell of a drag race.
